ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jordan Matter, a portrait and dance photographer in New York City, is the grandson of renowned photographer Herbert Matter and the great-grandson of painter Arthur B. Carles. As a child, Matter spent time with artists such as Alexander Calder and Willem de Kooning, yet he did not discover his own passion for the visual arts until he stumbled upon an exhibition by Henri Cartier-Bresson and decided to pursue a career in photography.
Matter’s book, Dancers Among Us (Workman Publishing, 2012), became a New York Times bestseller and international phenomenon. "In Jordan Matter's photos, dancers make all the world their stage," wrote The New York Times, and Diane Sawyer praised, "breathtaking photos to free your imagination!" His critically acclaimed follow up book, Dancers After Dark (Workman Publishing, 2016), was celebrated in media throughout the world.
Matter and his work have been #1 on Reddit and featured on ABC World News, the Today Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, RTL German TV, the BBC, NPR, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The Oprah Magazine, New York Magazine and Buzzfeed. Matter has exhibited widely, including solo shows at the Furman Gallery at Lincoln Center, the Hudson River Museum, the Edward Hopper House, the Museum of Dance, Arts Brookfield NYC, the Brucie Gallery in Kiev, Ukraine, the Berthold Center in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Savina Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea. Among his collectors are actor Alan Cumming and Prince Albert of Monaco.
Matter is currently working on his next book, Born to Dance (Workman Publishing, 2018).
