First edition, presentation association copy, signed and warmly inscribed by the poet, "For Miss Barbara Cohen / signed / with good wishes, / Edith Sitwell."
The recipient, Barbara Cohen, co-founded Caedman Records with Marianna Roney in 1952. In 1955 the label released "Edith Sitwell Reading Her Poems," which included recordings of many of the poems that appeared for the first time in the United States in the 1954 Vanguard "Collected Poems." These included the complete 'Facade' (now thirty-four poems), the complete 'Sleeping Beauty,' and the majestic 'Madness of Soul,' a long fragment.
This collection brings together the volumes of poetry that established Edith Sitwell as one of the world's most important poets. This rare and desirable edition introduced American readers to the full range and accomplishments of Sitwell's poems, already highly regarded in Great Britain. It also includes a captivating and instructive 45-page essay by Sitwell entitled "Some Notes on My Own Poetry."
