Description

The Viola is modeled after the Girolamo Amati Viola in the Galeria Estense, and made by the participants with the Scrollavezza/Zanre book as a reference. The proceeds of this auction will go to the Violin Society of America Scholarship Fund. More info at www.vsaweb.org/scholarships .

The Viola’s back length is 411 mm: 16 1/4". The back, top, and scroll are European tonewood, with a fine, even figure in the maple, and even winter grains in the top. The varnish is an orange-nut-brown color, and has moderate wear and antiquing.

The viola is the brainchild of Dwight Brown, who brought together members on an online forum to create an instrument that could be auctioned for the benefit of student makers. Many individuals donated their expertise to the project, specific credits given below. Dwight donated the books, tonewood, and case for the viola, and many other members of the forum chipped in in other ways. The thread can be found at:

Additional Information

International Violin Company has donated the shipping costs within the United States. The winners will be responsible for additional costs to ship outside of the U.S. Sales tax will apply for bids placed from accounts based in the State of Texas.


The Viola will be sold "as is", and the winning bid must be paid within 48 hours of the auction close. Christopher Germain will provide any maintenance needed during the first year of ownership. Any shipping or travel expenses required will be the responsibility of the owner.
