Matthew Abbott is known for his bold, abstract paintings containing a swirl of geometric shapes and text. Inspired by a range of sources, including crossword puzzles, Islamic design, and record covers, Matthew’s work evokes a complex rhythm, with suggestions of symmetry and repetition, and explores contradictory tensions between gesture and geometry, flat design and threedimensionality, stasis and dynamism.
Matthew's work is in a number of private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Denver Museum of Art, Colorado; the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; the Akron Art Museum, Ohio; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the New York Public Library.
A London native, Matthew currently lives and works in San Francisco, California. He has an upcoming solo show in September at the LMAK Gallery (289 Grand Street, New York, NY).
