Painting/Collage on Wood
20" x 24"

2012

"I made the three works included here in 2012, when my kids were two and four. I wanted to depict an interior, nearly-claustrophobic space, with optically packed patterns jammed up against the picture plane. I layered painted wood-grain and stripes with newsprint, pages from a book on 1940's textile design, and art magazines. I felt apart from the contemporary art world at the time, preoccupied with matters close to home."

Mandolyn Wilson Rosen earned a BFA from Cornell University in 1996 and MFA from Bard College in 2008. In 2008, she received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant to study with artist Rachel Harrison at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida, and a Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Fellowship. She majored in photography at Cornell and got her first glimpse of Man Ray, Hannah Hoch, Kurt Schwitters and other artists who used collage.

Her work has been included in "Greater Brooklyn" at CRG Gallery in New York; "Studio Show," curated by Dean Daderko at the studio of David Reed in New York; and "Forced Collaboration II", curated by Jacob Rhodes at Artspace New Haven. Mandolyn lives in Saugerties and Queens, NY.
