Jaco Van Schalkwyk
Lithographic Ink on Paper
30" x 22"
2014
This drawing is from my final exhibition with GALLERY AOP in Johannesburg. They began as spiral incantations with graphite aimed at opening up unknown species of form. Once I'd accessed forms that were new to me, the spirals were scraped closed repeatedly with lithographic ink and sutured shut with litho crayon.
Jacob van Schalkwyk (b. 1979) received his BFA in Drawing from the Pratt Institute in 2003, where he was the recipient of the Pratt Circle Award for academic achievement. He was lucky enough to meet Mark in a bar before returning to South Africa in 2008, where he worked with the seminal GALLERY AOP in Johannesburg until it closed.
His work has been included in private and corporate collections in South Africa, Europe and the United States. He currently lives and works in Cape Town, making his work available through David Krut Projects and Commune1 gallery. He is a founder of www.1K.co.za (Art for a Grand). His debut novel, The Alibi Club, was published by Umuzi Random House in 2015 to critical acclaim.
