Mariah Forster Olson was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of one on June 6, 1980, and her tumor grew out of several levels of her spine, wrapped around a portion of her heart, and occupied almost the entire right side of her chest. After undergoing multiple surgeries and several rounds of radiation treatments, Mariah was given a low rate of survival. However, she underwent two years of a very new, experimental chemotherapy protocol, which saved her life. She is very appreciative and blessed to be alive, but as a result of the location of the tumor, the treatments, and being treated in the early eighties, she has around 100 different medical conditions and late effects. As a result of her experiences, Mariah has devoted her life to fighting childhood cancer, and works with multiple nonprofits.

On August 22, 2020, Mariah Forster Olson will be celebrating 40 years from her childhood cancer diagnosis with Mariah’s Celebration Fundraiser. This event was originally scheduled to take place at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, but positive COVID-19 cases have dramatically increased in La Crosse County and for everyone's safety and protection, all events have been cancelled indefinitely at the church. Mariah's Celebration Fundraiser is still going to take place on August 22 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., but it is now going to be a virtual event, consisting of a program and silent auction. The majority of the proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to two nonprofits - the Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. The remainder of the proceeds will go to C.O.U.R.A.G.E., a local childhood cancer organization, and the American Cancer Society.
