Artist Lorraine Fink

Virtual Art Auction

The Simon Family JCC/United Jewish Federation of Tidewater is honored  to present this collection of Lorraine's work.

All proceeds will benefit Visual Arts programming and classes at the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and Simon Family JCC.

This selection of 96 watercolor and ink drawings by Norfolk artist Lorraine Fink comprises less than half of the fresh new works she has created in the past three years. As you view the drawings, you’ll find dancers, musicians, masked forms, and women morphing into birds. Birds abound, Fink’s symbol of freedom. Fink states:

“For me, the imagery of animals and birds is a metaphor for the human condition. Birds are a symbol of aspects of humanity, fidelity, and family values. They are universal symbols of freedom and peace.”

Fink is a student of cultures other than our own, drawing inspiration from her travels to India, Africa, China, New Guinea, and South America with her late husband, pediatrician Dr. H. William Fink.

Delving into comparative religions while studying painting with Charles Sibley and printmaking with Ken Daley, Fink earned both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. at Old Dominion University (ODU). Her Seven Days of Creation series is on permanent exhibit in the Cardo of the Sandler Family Campus, and a series embracing the essence of Judaism are displayed in the permanent collection of Ohef Sholom Temple.

Fink’s creativity knows no bounds. After her prior show in the Leon Family Gallery, she rescued the Simon Family JCC’s obsolete gymnasium light fixtures from their impending demise in a landfill, and converted them into whimsical sculptures created solely from a variety of repurposed discards. They created the centerpiece of a one-woman show at the Slover Library in Norfolk and look forward to returning to the JCC for a show in the future.

Fink has influenced art collectors and creators throughout the region through her shows, teaching, and philanthropy. Her works have shown in juried and invitational art shows including those at the Chrysler Museum, the Virginia Museum, the Hermitage Museum, MOCA, the Perrel Art Gallery at Norfolk Academy, and the Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries at ODU.

Among her numerous awards are the Virginia Watercolor Society’s Purchase Award at the College of William and Mary, The Miniatures Juror’s Choice Award at the Hermitage Museum, a Tidewater Artist Today Painting Award at the Virginia Beach Arts Center and inclusion in a two-year travelling Smithsonian exhibition from the Virginia Museum. Her paintings and sculpture are in many public and private collections.

Fink has taught monotype at ODU, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Peninsula Fine Arts Center, and privately.

Fink and her husband created the Lorraine and Bill Fink Scholarship at ODU in honor of Ken Daley. We are honored that Lorraine Fink, 96 and painting daily, has generously donated the proceeds from the sale of this collection to the Simon Family JCC and United Jewish Federation of Tidewater.
