Fine art miniatures are a historic art form of fine art "in little." Modern American juried show guidelines define a miniature as an image of 25 square inches or less, and subject matter scaled to 1/6 or less of life size. Exceptions may be made for subjects so small in life that they do not lend themselves to 1/6 scale.
Fine art miniatures are fully realized works following all the criteria applicable to work "in large," with the addition of delicate, exquisite detail. Artists work with the tiniest of brushes, and magnifiers may be used both to create and view the work. On average, a miniature takes 9 times longer per square inch to create than does a large work.
