Description

Enjoy an evening under the stars featuring the guided use of a 10-inch telescope, building a small telescope from a kit, and casual chat about the latest developments in planetary science and space exploration, featuring professional space communicator Doug Isbell.

Doug has worked in space and astronomy outreach for 30 years, from being a journalist for a major space industry newspaper, serving as the public affairs officer for NASA missions to Mars, the Moon, Saturn, asteroids and comets, and leading the public education group at Kitt Peak National Observatory outside Tucson, to—today—working for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena on the launch of Jeep-sized rovers to explore the Red Planet; the next rover, called Mars 2020, will gather samples of Mars that could be returned to Earth in the future.

Amazing sights in the large telescope should include the first-quarter Moon and the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn. Doug will also demonstrate and assist in the assembly of a small refractor telescope kit, called the Galileoscope, which the winning bidder can keep for future views of the Moon and planets.

Along with this once-in-a-lifetime experience and their own Galileoscope, the winning bidder will also receive three (3) framed posters!

There are three options for weekend evening dates, weather permitting. The winning bidder is welcome to host the event (anywhere in Los Angeles County, with Burbank/Glendale/North Hollywood being the preferred location) if they have a good view of the night sky; otherwise, a suitable local park or other venue can be determined. Should the session be rained out or clouded out, every attempt will be made to reschedule.

AVAILABLE DATES TO CHOOSE FROM:
June 7, 8 or 9, 2019 (9-Midnight+plus)
July 6, 7 or 8, 2019 (9pm-Midnight)
Sept 6, 7 or 8, 2019 (7pm-10pm)

PLEASE NOTE: Seeing Saturn during the June 2019 dates will require staying up until past Midnight.
