About The Artist:
Anni Melançon always knew she would be an artist. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1978, majoring in ceramics, she moved to Cape Ann, where she has since made her life as a professional studio potter. She has been particularly inspired by the early-20th-century collaboration of the Japanese potter Shoji Hamada and the English potter Bernard Leach. While she creates some sculptural vessels and works with raku, pit-fired, and majolica techniques, she always returns to reduction high-fired functional vessels.
A founding member of Cape Ann Artisans, Anni says: “The Artisans have been an important part of my personal and professional life as a potter. We started getting together about a year after I moved to Gloucester in 1978, and I have lifelong friends who I might have never had the opportunity to be close to, or even met, while we all worked alone in our studios. What I learned especially from my potter friends, is that supporting each other - not competing, but helping each other out, whether borrowing tin oxide and kiln shelves, firing each other’s pots, or sharing meals.”

Anni and her students have supported the Empty Bowl project from the first year on, generously donating all kinds of hand-made bowls.
