When Dave Rosenthal retired from teaching four years ago, he was able to pursue his great love of art. He chose glass as the medium because it allowed him to blend color, light and texture into his work. It also opened up a new avenue for him to support the lifelong passion of animal rescue that he shares with his wife. 100% of all the proceeds from his glass commissions are donated to pet rescues to fund their lifesaving work.
Dave's work is displayed in private collections, businesses and non-profit organizations both in the United States and internationally. To date, his efforts have resulted in more than $50,000 in donations to animal rescues.
The process starts with the winner selecting several headshots of their pet, then Dave draws out the design and confirms with the auction winner.
Next comes selection of the glass, which is ordered special for each portrait. Dave then starts cutting - all pieces of glass are cut by hand, then assembled on a white glass base. With frit (ground glass) added for shading. The completed piece spends a day in his kiln - fused glass pieces require 1,400 degrees to fuse. Finally, the piece is framed in wood. The result is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind tribute to your pet!
