Taru Lahti received a B.F.A. in 1989 from The Center For Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. Specializing in automotive design, he accepted a position with Ford Motor, in their International Studio. In 1990 he was chosen to design the exterior for a four-door luxury concept car, the “Contour” debuted at the 1991 Detroit International Auto Show. The “Contour” was selected as “Best Concept Car” that year. In that same year he was sent to Turin, Italy were Ford’s prestigious Ghia Design Studio is located. He again was chosen to design a show car for the Turin Auto Show. This time it was to be a two-door sports car. The “Ghia Focus” debuted in March of 1992, too much critical acclaim. The focus won “Best In Show”. On his return to the U.S. he moved to New York, moved to a studio in Williamsburg were he designed and fabricated custom one of a kind furniture. In June of 1996 he returned to Detroit and Ford to learn new computer technology, 3D modeling and digital sketching.

The Focus won “Best Concept Car” with the highest form of praise coming from the very famous Italian automotive designer “Giorgio Giugiaro” who said as he walked up to the Focus “ It is not a car it is a piece of art”.



Taru left Ford in 2001 to start his own design company, “TARU LAHTI DESIGN L.L.C.”, that creates product concepts, furniture and interior design. Since then he has done design & fabrication work for ASTRO Gaming, ROCK STAR Games, Red Bull (house of art), Motor City Casino, The Work media group, His current projects are Wright&Co, Selden Standard, Sugar House, Red Bull, Great Lakes Coffee Roasting, Tow James distillery, Stand BY, MGM Grand Casino and other Detroit business.
