In 1998, the first annual Mel Fisher Appreciation Days was held celebrating Mel Fisher and the finding of the motherload of the Atocha in July 1985. Mel Fisher was honored as a group of family, friends, and supporters formed a ‘parade’, wearing “Today’s the Day” t-shirts and waving Conch Republic flags, following “King Mel”, ensconced in a pedicab with his Conch Republic Crown and his Conch Shell scepter. Each year, the event became more popular and attendance grew so much, that the Fisher family decided to expand the event and donate the net proceeds to charities
The Mel Fisher family invites the public to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the “Finding of the Atocha mother lode” with a reunion of the Golden Crew members at Schooner Wharf Bar on Tuesday, July 20th, beginning at 5:30 pm. Everyone is welcome! At 6:45 PM, the family will present the “2021 Mel Fisher Lifetime Achievement Award” to a deserving recipient.
We hope that in 2022 we will be able to resume our All Out, All Day events with the whole shebang including guided tours being offered aboard one of our Salvages boats at the dock at Schooner Wharf Bar, Treasure Trivia, 50/50 raffle, live on stage auctions, and a chance to win authentic shipwreck treasure with the ‘treasured cupcakes” event, along with a “ live silent auction” and family and crew reunion. 2022 will be an exciting year since it will be the 400-year commemoration of the Atocha sinking, 1622-2022, and what would have been Mel Fisher’s 100th birthday.
