Bidding starts July 23 at 1:00pm and closes on August 6, at 1:00pm.
The artwork in this online auction is by Joseph L. Smongeski (1914 - 2001). He was the father of Josette (Smongeski) Lyders, a longtime resident of Peacham, Vermont. Josette inherited a large number of paintings and drawings by her father, from which she selected this auction collection. She will give all profits from winning bids made in this auction to Peacham Library.
Joseph Smongeski, born in Wisconsin, studied at the Chicago Art Institute, had a long career as a book designer in New York and Boston, taught adult art classes for decades, and had many exhibitions of his works in several states. With his wife Georgette, he raised his family in Massachusetts. His artwork comprised portraiture, landscape done en plein air, still life, and imaginative pieces. He delighted in painting trips to Vermont and Northern New England.
The variety of his works here online can be viewed concurrently in live exhibitions in the Gilmore Gallery at Peacham Library and at the Peacham Café. Although works photographed for this auction show frames, the actual art image measurements are height by width and accurate to within ½ inch. Image titles were assigned by the artist. All but three of the works available for bidding are framed. Frames shown are included in the bidding price, and their descriptions are detailed in each description and in an exhibition notebook at Peacham Library.
