Christine has been an artist since her very
early days when she was enrolled by her
mother, an oil painter of Maine landscapes, in
painting and drawing classes. Once Christine
retired to Maine, she found a way to combine
her love of the rugged Maine coast with her
love of creating gorgeous landscapes through
fiber. With punch needle rug hooking, also
known as “New England style” rug hooking,
Christine recreates Maine sunsets, tides and
skies. By using wool from Karakul sheep,
known for centuries as the source for oriental
rug yarn, as well as local Maine wool,
Christine is able to craft exquisite colors into
well-known scenes of Maine to achieve
brilliant tapestries and pillows.
Punch needle rug hooking begins with the
selection of a design and rug wool, followed
by stretching a piece of monk’s cloth, made of
basket weave cotton, onto a wooden frame.
The design can be purchased or designed and
applied by hand. Christine designs and
applies her own designs. The image is formed
with a punch needle, requiring hundreds of
stitches to form the design of two-foot square
rug. The rug is then hemmed. They can be
hung on the wall as tapestries, used on the
floor or formed into pillows. In addition, they
can be used as table runners or trivets for the
dining room table. The choice is yours.
This finished piece is 15 inches by 14 inches.
It can be hung on a wall (dowel provided) or
upon request, can be converted by the artist
into a pillow.
This piece reflects the beautiful hills of the
Scatter Good Farm in Brunswick, during the
early morning when the sun breaks over the
